SOUTH RIVER, N.J. (AP) — Authorities are investigating a police shooting that left a man wounded in central New Jersey.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan says the 51-year-old South River man was brandishing a knife when he confronted two borough officers at an apartment complex early Saturday. One of the officers then shot the man, whose name was not disclosed.

The man was hospitalized in serious but stable condition. Neither officer was injured in the confrontation, but authorities would not identify them or provide further details on the shooting.

The officers had responded to the Village Green complex around 3:20 a.m., after some residents reported a man had threatened them in the parking lot.

The shooting is under investigation by the prosecutor’s office, which is standard policy in police-involved shootings.
